New carpets
When carpets are new it's important not to vacuum them too often.
With proper regular care, you can add years of life to a carpet and
help it to retain its original appearance.
In the early days a gentle once over with your machine brushes at
an elevated position on an occasional basis is best. This will
remove any loose threads and manufacturers dust. Continue to clean
gently on a weekly basis so that you avoid a build up of soiling
which can damage the carpet fibres.
Best to avoid too much direct sunlight in the early days. Juts
about every new carpet will lighten in colour of fade over of time.
The extent of damage depends on: the location, exposure, colour,
intensity and type of dye and method of dyeing of the carpet.
A carpet that has been dyed in a solution is least susceptible to
sun fading. The pigments are added before the fibres are formed,
locking in the colour. Most polypropylene, many acrylics, and some
polyester carpets are dyed by this method. Natural wool carpets are
another matter and should be treated with extra care.

sticky soil that has accumulated in the pile from pound-in dirt,
pollution and even cooking odours. This oily soil is most apparent
to the eye on light carpets - they seem dull and the delicate colour
is hidden.
If this type of soil is allowed to build up, it actually begins
to attract and hold the dry soil. The more dirt on the carpet, the
more damage to the carpet fibres. Professional cleaning will
re-vitalise your carpet and remove soil and dust that has settled
beyond the reach of vacuum cleaning.
Rugs
Like everything else rugs need special care to ensure a long
life. Regular cleaning using adequate treatments will help extend
the life of your rug. For stain removal it is highly
recommended that all spills be cleaned immediately. Research has
shown that up to 90% of stains from spillages can be prevented if
dealt with straight away.
Carpet and rug Stains
If your rug (or carpet) is already stained, here are some helpful
hints.
- Immediately mop up as much of the spillage as possible. Then pad
(do not rub) with a clean absorbent cloth or paper towels to remove
excess liquids.
- Gently dowse the stained area with warm water and then pad with a
white cloth or paper tissues. Press down firmly to remove as much
liquid as possible. Repeat until there is no evidence of damp left on
the tissues (yes that much).
- If the staining remains on the carpet, use a solution of warm
water and mild non-bleach detergent and apply enough to cover
the stain. Let it soak for 10 minutes.
- Rinse with clean warm water and repeat so that all detergent is
removed.
- When dry vacuum or brush the pile in order to restore the texture.
